People at Two Echo

(Note: Photos are not matched to descriptions!)

Hallie and Zeke moved to Two Echo from the Boston area when they felt it was time for a change from the congestion and isolation of suburban living. Wheelbarrow Zeke is a software developer, and continues to work sometimes in Massachusetts, sometimes from home.  Hallie has a background in clinical social work, and now teaches and practices the healing technique "Reiki the Polarity Way."  She also enjoys mentoring/assisting young people in the local school system.  Their son attends Brunswick High School, where he somehow balances a high academic standard with a busy social life and a love of basketball and soccer.  The family likes to spend summer days at the coast, kayaking, sailing, or just "hanging out."  In winter they rely on Bowdoin College sports, as well as the high school games, to get them out of the house.

Helen moved from Pennsylvania to Two Echo with her menagerie of rescued dogs.  She still volunteers with Second Chance Boxer Rescue by fostering and transporting rescued boxers. Sledding  She is a retired U. S. Navy Chief who served for 27 years.  Her grown son, David, was a Crab Fisherman in the Bering Sea for 10 years and then graduated from Embry Riddle Aeronautical University in Florida.  He is now flying float planes in Southeast Alaska.  David and his wife Mary (who he met while she was renting a house at Two Echo) celebrated their wedding here several years ago and are now the proud parents of three sons.  Helen enjoys kayaking in Maine and Alaska and spending lots of time with the grandchildren.

Enid and Robert came to CoupleMaine in 1979, while in their early forties, to get away from it all (New York and New Jersey and an academic life of engineering, math and physics). They took up gardening and raising goats, sheep and chickens. Both are now "officially" retired.

Alex moved to Two Echo from Yarmouth with his son David in 1998. He was a teacher and school administrator for twenty-odd years, and retired from a second career as a "faceless bureaucrat" for the State of Maine in 2001. His wife Irene, who works as a property manager in Portland, joined Alex at Two Echo in 2005. They both enjoy travel, kayaking and the myriad cultural and gustatory delights of the Brunswick-Portland area. Since attaining gainful unemployment, Alex has been involved in an assortment of volunteer endeavors. Alex and Irene, seeking to downsize, are planning a move to a smaller condo close by, but will keep in touch as Associates of Two Echo.

Amy and Chris and their two children (16 and 12) have been involved in Two Echo from its earliest days. Chris works for an alternative energy company, primarily on the solar heating end. Amy works as Director of Finance & Publications for the Convention and Visitors Bureau in Portland. They enjoy being outdoors: canoeing, kayaking, camping, gardening, hiking, etc. as well as participating in the many Two Echo Common House dinners, game nights, movie nights, in-community concerts and all the other activities that make up a busy Two Echo social life.

Randy and Betty have spent most of their "career" years involved in one way or another with people with developmental disabilities. Now "retired" Randy works part time at L.L. Bean and does a lot of bike riding. They have two grown children, a son who is a musician living in Massachusetts and a daughter who is married and living in nearby Freeport. Their grandson is the sunshine in their lives. In their free time they like to camp, travel, kayak and cross-country ski. Randy is an avid catch and release fly fisherman and likes listening to the blues. Betty has been known to garden in the rain and likes to make things with her hands.

James and Linda have two sons (17 and 22) and a beautiful new granddaughter. Linda has taught preschool for many years and is currently teaching the four-year-olds at a small private elementary school in Freeport. She enjoys crafts of all kinds, especially quilting. After working for a large insurance company in Portland for many years, James has made a career shift. He recently completed the teaching certification program in special education and social studies at the University of Southern Maine and looks forward to beginning his new career as a special education teacher. He likes to listen to jazz.

John and Karen and their two children have lived at Two Echo for eight years in three different Two Echo houses.  John is an Episcopal priest at St. Alban's Church in Cape Elizabeth; Karen is developing a practice in energy work known as Reconnective Healing.  As a family they enjoy camping, trips to Portland Sea Dogs games, and frequent excursions to nearby White's Beach to beat the summer heat.

Katie and Rob and their two children (15 and 12) live in the Two Echo home that Rob and his crew built in 1998. Porch Rob has a building business. Katie is a former elementary school teacher who writes children's books, including two that have been published. Their household includes numerous animals including a dog, angora goats, and several chickens. Together and separately they enjoy such activities as walking and skiing in the Two Echo woods, camping, soccer, making crafts, playing music, and cooking.

Jean came to Maine after having lived in New Hampshire, Kentucky, Vermont, Massachusetts and New York. During earlier years in her life, Jean raised four children, taught school, ran for local political office, raised chickens, canned vegetables and dabbled in designing her future "dream houses." Jean is just down the pedestrian lane from her daughter, Katie (mentioned above), and her delightful grandchildren.

Craig and Carol and their two teenage girls came to Two Echo in 1996—hard to believe that the girls were just six and three back then! KidsCraig helped craft our conservation easement and decision-making processes. Today Craig is a professional meeting facilitator (Good Group Decisions). Also "back then" Carol and others from the neighborhood raised funds and persuaded the town to purchase and conserve the Cox Pinnacle property nearby. Today Carol serves as the diabetes educator at Mid Coast Hospital. Craig has a goat, sheep and chickens which various children from the neighborhood help care for. He also maintains a community wood-fired sauna. Craig and Carol take full advantage of Two Echo's woods and fields with regular walks and skiing in the winter.

Frederik and Cicy discovered cohousing just before graduating from college.  Over a decade later they moved to Maine and joined the Two Echo Cohousing Community where they live in a timberframe house with their two young children.  Frederik appreciates the use of Craig's sauna, enjoys playing music with his neighbors and family and the occasional social running and biking opportunities.  Cicy is trying to landscape with mostly edible plants on the family's LCE, enjoys all the gardening opportunities at Two Echo, and has learned to play bluegrass on her guitar.  Along with another neighbor they organized the first short order cook diner-style breakfast at Two Echo's Blasted Knoll Cafe (aka the Common House).

Cathryn and Kurt remembered visiting friends living in Two Echo a few years ago. Soccer They loved the friendly community atmosphere, the rural setting with lots of neighbors and young children. It seemed to be a perfect place to raise a family, so they recently moved here from nearby Richmond. Cathryn is a geologist, who teaches at Bowdoin College and Kurt is a recent graduate from nursing school who works at Mid Coast Hospital. Their common passion is vegetable gardening. In their first summer here Kurt, Cathryn and their young 4-year old daughter could be seen regularly working in their garden along Echo Road. This summer their son, the newest member of their family, joined them. Kurt and Cathryn also enjoy traveling, birding, playing music, and cooking.

Clare and Larry have lived at Two Echo for almost ten years. They have three children ages, 13, 11, and 9. Clare is a Waldorf-trained teacher and holds a Masters Degree in Special Education. She is the director and teacher of Little Acorns LiveWays Nursery/Kindergarten, a home-based, Waldorf-inspired children's program. In addition, she teaches parent-child education classes throughout the winter months. When she is not working or volunteering at her children's school she loves to garden, create with felt and take Zumba classes! Larry is a self-employed lobster fisherman who fishes out of Interstate Co-op in Harpswell, Maine. When he is not hauling traps he loves to be with his family, ride his bike or learn how to do yoga. He loves to cook with his wife, Clare, go to his son's baseball games, listen to his daughter learning piano or just telling stories at bedtime.

Joy and Steve live in their timberframe home with their two young sons. They lived near Boston for twelve years and moved to Brunswick in 2004. They were drawn to the combination of community (shared meals, impromptu music) and open space (gardens, trails, chickens) that Two Echo offers. Steve is a self-employed cabinetmaker (Fiddlehead Designs) and Joy is a project manager for a local environmental consulting company.

Jean and Bill, recently retired educators, along with their cat, Moxie, moved to Two Echo from Bucks County, Pennsylvania. Reading As educators (Bill as a school superintendent, Jean as a teacher educator), their careers have taken them to New York, New Hampshire, Vermont, Maine, Arizona, and Pennsylvania. Seeking a place where community matters as well as one closer to their son's family in Massachusetts, they began researching cohousing communities in New England. They found Two Echo and are glad they did. They enjoy the community gatherings, gardening, the great restaurants and cultural offerings of the surrounding towns, and spending more time with their three grandchildren.
